The rapid advancement of digital technologies has fundamentally transformed the ways in which individuals, communities, and institutions interact, produce knowledge, and respond to contemporary global challenges. Artificial intelligence, digital communication, big data, social media, and emerging technologies are reshaping not only economic and political systems but also religious practices, educational models, cultural identities, and social relationships. While these transformations present unprecedented opportunities for innovation and collaboration, they also raise pressing ethical, environmental, and societal questions that require thoughtful academic reflection.
Within this context, the Borneo International Academic Forum (BIAF) emerges as an international interdisciplinary conference that evolved from the Borneo Undergraduate Academic Forum (BUAF), a collaborative academic initiative established in 2016 by four Islamic State Universities (PTKIN) in Kalimantan: UIN Antasari Banjarmasin, UIN Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris Samarinda, UIN Palangka Raya, and IAIN Pontianak. Conceived as a platform to cultivate research culture among undergraduate students, BUAF has, for nearly a decade, successfully fostered scholarly exchange, academic networking, and collaborative research among higher education institutions across Borneo. Through its annual rotation among the founding universities, BUAF has contributed significantly to strengthening student research capacity and promoting a vibrant academic community within the region.
Building upon this successful legacy, the forum has now been renamed the Borneo International Academic Forum (BIAF). This transformation marks a significant milestone in expanding the forum’s vision from an undergraduate gathering into an international academic platform that accommodates both the Undergraduate Academic Forum (UAF) and the Postgraduate Academic Forum (PAF). While preserving BUAF’s collaborative spirit and identity, BIAF broadens its scope to welcome participants from universities worldwide, fostering cross-cultural dialogue, interdisciplinary collaboration, and international research partnerships.
Furthermore, BIAF is distinguished by three defining characteristics that shape its academic identity.
First, BIAF is rooted in Borneo. More than simply a geographical region, Borneo represents a dynamic intellectual landscape where biodiversity, indigenous knowledge, multicultural societies, Islamic traditions, and environmental challenges converge. The conference positions Borneo as a living laboratory of knowledge, encouraging research that transforms local experiences and wisdom into globally relevant scholarship.
Second, BIAF embraces the integration of Islam, Science, and Society, reflecting the educational philosophy of UIN Antasari Banjarmasin. Rather than viewing religious knowledge, scientific inquiry, and social realities as separate domains, the forum promotes interdisciplinary dialogue that brings these perspectives together to address contemporary issues. This integrative approach encourages innovative research that combines ethical values, scientific advancement, and social responsibility in pursuit of sustainable and inclusive development.
Third, BIAF responds to the opportunities and challenges of the Digital Era. Digital technologies, artificial intelligence, big data, and online communication are fundamentally reshaping education, religious practice, governance, culture, and everyday life. Accordingly, BIAF provides a scholarly platform to examine how digital transformation influences the interaction among Islam, science, and society, while encouraging responsible innovation and ethical solutions for the future. Through these pillars, BIAF positions itself as more than an academic conference. It aspires to become an international platform for producing locally grounded, globally relevant, and digitally responsive scholarship, empowering young researchers to contribute meaningfully to advancing knowledge and the sustainable development of humanity.
